When Selleck and her turned the dance floor in 1985, “I gotta say, she seemed to be having the time of her life.”
Princess Diana’s November 9, 1985, dance at the White House with actor John Travolta was one of the most memorable events of her completely iconic 36-year existence. Diana, however, turns out to have danced on the dance floor with another well-known 1980s actor who is still in the business. Her dance with Tom Selleck is noteworthy even though it may not garner as much media attention as Travolta’s did.
Selleck published his autobiography, You Never Know, on Tuesday of this week.
As it turns out, Selleck came dangerously close to turning down a dance with the Princess of Wales, who was visiting the White House with her husband, Prince Charles, and for a dinner hosted by First Lady Nancy Reagan and President Ronald Reagan. Selleck described in his memoir how he eventually ended up dancing with Diana—and how it nearly didn’t happen at all.
Selleck wasn’t sure if he would be able to travel to D.C. for the event at all because he was filming Magnum, P.I. in Hawaii at the time. However, he was informed by his publicist, “Look, there are only three actors on this personal guest list—you, Clint Eastwood, and John Travolta.”
Selleck stated that as Travolta and Diana enjoyed their iconic dance, he and Eastwood tried to maintain a low profile. As reported by People, Selleck wrote, “We slipped away from all the dancers and moved to a spot slightly around the corner.”
By now, John and Princess Di were having a great time dancing to a fast-paced song. The others ceased their dancing and surrounded them with hand claps in a circle.

However, as soon as Diana and Travolta started dancing again, a British woman approached Selleck, pressuring him to interrupt the couple and ask Diana to dance, out of concern that their second dance could “start rumors.”
For Diana, this stands out above the many remarkable moments she has experienced in her lifetime.
Selleck shouted, “I’m not cutting in on John Travolta!” in a loud voice. He went on, saying the woman “was not too pleased.” Although he didn’t end up cutting in on Travolta, he did intervene before the two could start a third dance.

Although he doesn’t frequently get star struck, Selleck said to Town & Country that Diana amazed him. “Oh yeah, I was starstruck,” he told the publication, adding that he had apologized to her for his lack of dancing prowess and disclosed that he had “skipped cotillion” at dance school.
