AACTA PRESENTS THE FOXTEL GROUP AACTA AWARDS 2024: ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS

The complete list of award winners, including those for the AACTA International Awards and the audience-voted Audience Choice Awards, is proudly announced by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA). Following another fantastic year of Australian film production, the top awards were Talk to Me, The Newsreader, Deadloch, and The New Boy.

AACTA PRESENTS THE FOXTEL GROUP AACTA AWARDS 2024: ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS

Before presiding over the ceremony at HOTA (Home of the Arts) on the Gold Coast, Rebel Wilson walked the red carpet. At the star-studded 2024 AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel Group, the industry came together to honor the nation’s best and brightest screen talent. She was joined by Margot Robbie, Ron Howard, and Cate Blanchett.
The biggest winner of the evening was Talk to Me, who had already won eight awards after the AACTA Industry Awards earlier in the week. They added three more Awards to their collection.

Securing Best Film and Best Direction in Film awards—the latter going to brother-turned-directors Danny and Michael Philippou—were arguably the production’s greatest moments.Deadloch and The Newsreader both had tremendous success, winning five AACTA Awards apiece. The Newsreader won Best Drama Series once more, extending its winning streak from season one to six with the addition of the second season. For writing Deadloch, the comedy team of Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan won Best Screenplay in Television.

In terms of individual honors, rising actress Sophie Wilde took home the Best Lead Actress in Film title for her performance in Talk to Me, while Aswan Reid, another young talent, earned Best Lead Actor in Film for his part in The New Boy.

With her second prize for Best Lead Actress in a Drama, which she received for playing Helen Norville in The Newsreader, Anna Torv made a clean sweep. With success, Hugo Weaving expanded his trophy collection by two. Weaving prizes for Best Lead Actor in a Drama and Best Supporting Actor in a Film were won by performances in the films Love Me and The Rooster, respectively.

Kate Box, a previous AACTA winner, was also recognized for her performance in Deadloch, taking home a title in one of the new 2024 categories: Best Acting in a Comedy.
The AACTA Trailblazer Award honours the successes, talents, and accomplishments of an Australian film practitioner who serves as an inspiration to others in the business.

Margot Robbie was the recipient of the Trailblazer award this year. Robbie’s work has been successful both behind the camera and through her production business, LuckyChap, where she still supports tales with strong female leads. Barbie, the movie she most recently starred in, broke box office records and was the largest release of 2023.

AACTA International Awards winners were also announced during the ceremony, including Oscar season favorites Barbie, The Bear, and Oppenheimer. Margot Robbie, Christopher Nolan, and Cillian Murphy were among the individual international winners.

In remembrance of the late business magnate Brian Walsh, AACTA announced the creation of the inaugural award last year. Ngali Shaw was this year’s recipient, and she took the award from virtual presenter Nicole Kidman on stage.

Through the AACTA Audience Choice Awards, Australians once again had the opportunity to select their favorite actors from a variety of cinema, television, and digital productions. The night’s biggest victors were homegrown talent, including media personality Sophie Monk, digital creator Kat Clark and her family, and Margot Robbie, who earned an unprecedented 300,000 votes.

With their success at the 2023 Women’s Football World Cup, the Matilda’s won the title of Australia’s Favorite Sporting Moment, continuing their incredible run.
Among the ceremony’s other highlights was paying tribute to the late Cal Wilson, who was awarded the AACTA Award for Best Comedy Performer posthumously. Bluey, a cultural phenomenon, kept breaking records and won Best Children’s Program for the fifth time in five years.
“We are reminded of the endless creativity and dedication within Australia’s screen industry as we reflect on the remarkable achievements showcased at the 2024 AACTA Awards,” stated AFI Chair Jack Christian. The inaugural AACTA Festival, a four-day celebration of Australia’s thriving film industry, including the 2024 AACTA Awards. From February 8–11, 2024, AACTA Festival—which has over 90 events—will offer a vibrant program of thought-provoking seminars, meet-and-greets, screenings, and activities that will facilitate networking within the Australian film industry. Throughout the Festival, a number of AACTA Award nominees and winners will participate in panels and discussions.

Michael Healy, Queensland’s Minister of Tourism, declared that the Gold Coast was the ideal location for honoring the top performers in the sector.
