A divorce could eventually result from taking on additional work to make ends meet and spending time apart from family, according to Selangor exco member Fahmi Ngah.

Couples who moved to Selangor may have done so as residents, but they would still need to file for divorce there, according to executive councillor Fahmi Ngah.
SHAH ALAM The High Muslim divorce rate in the state is attributed, in part, to the high expense of living, as informed to the Selangor assembly today.
According to Bernama, Fahmi Ngah, the head of the Islamic affairs and cultural innovation committee, the psychology and social well-being of spouses can suffer due to the discrepancy between income growth and the increasing cost of living, ultimately resulting in divorce.
People may look for extra part-time work or supplemental employment to satisfy their financial demands if their household income is insufficient to pay their bills.
When asked why Selangor’s divorce rate was greater than that of other states in 2023, Mu’izzuddeen Mahyuddin (PN-Hulu Bernam) pointed out that “due to busy work schedules, quality time withdecrease in children, which eventually affects family structures and causes divorce.”
Further aggravating the problem, according to Fahmi, were the city of Selangor’s rapid development and population movement.

The Selangor shariah judicial department, according to Fahmi, has recommended carrying out an extensive investigation to determine the reasons behind divorces in the region. This information may then be used by the state government or other organisations to create policies or initiatives aimed at reducing the figure.
