We had a conversation with Jussi Markkanen, the technical director of Skull and Bones, to learn more about how these elements are used to create such a distinctive PS5 adventure—the only thing lacking is the scent of the sea.
What is the story behind Skull and Bones’ title other than the much-discussed Jolly Roger allusion?
Markkanen: Skull and Bones takes place in a harsh universe inspired by the Indian Ocean during the turbulent Golden Age of Piracy. Danger lurks around every corner in this place, so you’ll need to seize every chance you can to survive and thrive in this hostile environment.
Skull and Bones, the game’s title, captures the gritty feel we’re bringing to the pirate fantasy: you start the game as a shipwrecked nobody and must steal and outsmart your way to rise to the position of the most formidable pirate lord.
How does Skull and Bones make use of the haptics of the Dual Sense controller?
Skull and Bones revolves around naval fighting as its central theme. You can defeat fabled sea creatures, assault forts, and outgun other ships by equipping a wide variety of potent weaponry.
Using the adjustable triggers on the Dual Sense wireless controller, a naval battle on the PS5 truly comes to life. You will be able to feel the various trigger tensions as you fire a range of diverse weapons, from enormous ballistae and sea fires to rocket launchers and mortars.
For instance, a slight pull on the adaptable triggers is all that is needed for weapons with quicker fire rates, such as ballista or carronade. The adaptable triggers convey the heft of your heaviest weaponry, such as bombards or rockets, so every shot you fire is unique and exciting. The weight of the long guns or sea fire is communicated through a stiffer resistance.
In addition, the controller makes distinct rumbling sounds in response to the positions of your weaponry and your damage. You will feel the force of the onslaught in your hands as well as see it on screen when an adversary fires a barrage of cannons at your starboard.
If gamers want to use the DualSense Edge wireless controller that they can customize, do you have any setup recommendations?
Mapping the spyglass shortcut is one option! A spyglass is a crucial piece of equipment in any pirate’s arsenal. It enables them to learn more about the world, including seeing potential threats and opening up other possibilities like prosperous trading routes.
How was the 3D audio on the PS5 included in the gameplay of Skull and Bones?
We’ve been able to innovate with the way you hear our game thanks to 3D audio. For example, you can determine whether to duck or brace for impact when faced with powerful attacks by precisely locating the arc of approaching mortar fire.
Your crew will frequently point out treasure floating in the water, so pay attention to them as well. With 3D Audio, you’ll never have to wonder precisely where the treasure is.
Did we also mention that they can be asked to perform sea shanties? Since they are going to! A simple tap of the D-Pad will play one of the thirty shanties sung in Bahasa Indonesia, Malagasy, English, and French when you map it to your rapid action wheel!
How does the pirating experience in Skull and Bones benefit from the PS5’s SSD speed?
As you sail from the coast of Africa to the East Indies in Skull and Bones, you’ll chase the horizon across everything from glistening blue-water shoals to furious, raging storms. In Skull & Bones, an expansive open world designed only for current-generation consoles, you can explore it in 4K at a targeted 60 frames per second.
Players will be able to move between outposts and dens to the wide Indian Ocean even more quickly thanks to the blazing-fast SSD! Players will be able to explore, set sail, and participate in thrilling naval conflicts with ease, which will contribute to an even more immersive experience on the high seas.
Which particular minute, nerdy element about pirate culture would you like players to be aware of, and why?
We wanted to bring back the piracy’s resistance, tension, and savagery in Skull and Bones. Ordinary men and women who had overcome adversity and desired to take control of their own destiny were known as pirates. Our research indicates that the pirates in the Indian Ocean were also resourceful, expanding their trade around the area to obtain intelligence and stealing resources for their personal benefit. They interacted with residents from many places, coming from all over the world, including the Indian Ocean, as we aimed to depict in our game.

Through frequent user testing and close collaboration with our community through the Insider Programme, we’ve been refining the version you’ll see on February 16. We have made improvements to the game as a result of the community’s comments, particularly in the areas of co-op, naval combat, and gameplay diversity.
We’ve already created a fantastic solo experience for our game, and time has allowed us to further spend in improving the cooperative experience. Among other things, this entails making sure the entire game can be played cooperatively and including the Call for Help function.
