Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 is now in “the latter stage of its life cycle” following the console’s sales that fell short of forecasts. Despite intense advertising, PS5 sales during the important holiday 2023 quarter came in lower than predicted, leading Sony to modify its previously established lofty target of 25 million units sold over the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.
PS5 Is Entering “The Later Phase of its Life Cycle,” According to Sony
Despite selling 8.2 million PS5s in the third quarter of 2023 (compared to 7.1 million in the same period the year before), Sony fell short of their ambitious sales goal. As to Bloomberg, Naomi Matsuoka, senior vice president at Sony, stated that the company anticipates a decline in PS5 sales starting in April 2024 and continuing until the end of March 2025, the next fiscal year.
According to quotes from Matsuoka, “PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle looking ahead.” We will therefore focus more on striking a balance between sales and profitability. We therefore anticipate a decline in PS5 hardware sales starting in the following fiscal year.
At the height of the epidemic, in November 2020, the PS5 was released. In barely over three years, 54.7 million units have been sold.. As the platform approaches its fourth birthday in November and Sony has said that it is now in the second half of its life cycle, speculation about the next generation and the PS6 is inevitable.
Hideo Kojima’s return to the action-espionage genre with Physint is one game that might be announced on the PS6. According to Kojima, after Death Stranding 2 and in collaboration with Sony, development on the game is anticipated to start “in earnest” at Kojima Productions.
